What Does GAF Certified Contractor Mean — And Why It Matters

Understanding what the GAF certification actually is, what it requires, and what protections it gives PA & NJ homeowners.

You’ve probably seen “GAF Certified” mentioned on roofing websites — including ours. But what does it actually mean? And why should it matter to you as a homeowner in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, or Delaware?

GAF is North America’s Largest Roofing Manufacturer

GAF (General Aniline & Film) manufactures more residential roofing products than any other company in North America. When a contractor installs GAF materials and is certified by GAF, they’re participating in a manufacturer-backed quality assurance program — not a self-awarded title.

What Certification Actually Requires

To become and remain a GAF Certified contractor, a roofing company must meet several ongoing requirements:

  • Valid state licensing — the contractor must be licensed in every state where they operate
  • Adequate insurance coverage — verified general liability and workers’ compensation
  • Clean complaint history — GAF reviews contractor records for unresolved consumer complaints
  • Ongoing training — installers must be trained on proper GAF installation techniques

GAF continuously monitors its certified contractors. Certification can be revoked for non-compliance, licensing lapses, or consumer complaints.

The Most Important Benefit: Transferable Warranty Coverage

This is the single biggest practical benefit for homeowners. When a GAF Certified contractor installs a qualifying GAF roofing system, you become eligible for GAF’s Golden Pledge® and System Plus® warranties — which extend the manufacturer’s material warranty to cover labor as well.

More importantly: these warranties are transferable. When you sell your home, the remaining warranty transfers to the new owner. In a competitive real estate market in communities like Moorestown NJ, Wayne PA, or Hockessin DE, a documented transferable warranty is a meaningful differentiator — and some buyers’ agents actually look for this.

A non-certified contractor cannot offer these warranties, regardless of what materials they install. Period.

What It Means for Storm Damage Claims

When hail or wind damage occurs, having a GAF warranty on file gives you a documented installation record that supports your insurance claim. The warranty specifies the exact materials installed, the installation date, and the contractor’s certification status — all of which adjusters find valuable.

How to Verify Certification

Any homeowner can verify a contractor’s GAF certification status by contacting GAF directly or asking to see the contractor’s current certification documents. You can also ask which tier of GAF certification the contractor holds — Certified, Master Elite, or another designation — and what that tier enables in terms of warranty offerings.
