Know What to Watch For

How Weather Affects Your Roof

A well-installed roof is built to handle Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware weather. Here’s how different conditions can affect a roof, and what you can safely check from the ground afterward.

High Winds

Strong gusts can get under shingle edges and lift or crease them, especially on aging roofs or where the adhesive seal has weakened. Once a shingle lifts, the next storm can drive water underneath.

What to look for: Missing, lifted or creased shingles, exposed nail lines, shingle pieces in the yard.

Hail

Hail can bruise shingles and knock granules loose, and it can dent flashing, gutters, downspouts, vents and siding. The damage is often invisible from the ground but can shorten a roof’s life.

What to look for: Dented gutters or downspouts, dings on metal vents, granules collecting at downspouts.

Heavy Rain

Rain itself rarely damages a sound roof, but heavy or wind-driven rain is when existing problems show up: worn flashing, failing pipe boots, clogged valleys and overflowing gutters.

What to look for: Ceiling stains, damp attic insulation, water at chimneys or skylights, overflowing gutters.

Fallen Branches & Debris

Falling limbs can puncture shingles and decking, break flashing and, in severe cases, damage rafters. Even a branch that only rests on the roof can scrape shingles as it moves in the wind.

What to look for: Branches on the roof, sagging areas, broken shingles or gutters, new leaks after a storm.

Ice & Snow

Snow adds weight, and melting snow that refreezes at the eaves can form ice dams that push water back under shingles. Good attic insulation and ventilation are the best defense.

What to look for: Icicles and ice ridges along gutters, water stains on exterior walls or ceilings near the eaves.

Thunderstorms & Lightning

Thunderstorms can bring several threats at once: sudden gusts, hail and downpours. A direct lightning strike can crack roofing materials or decking and always warrants a professional inspection.

What to look for: Any of the signs above, scorch marks, or damage near chimneys and antennas.

Most storms don’t damage a sound roof, and not every storm means a new one. If you’re not sure, a free inspection gives you a straight answer: no damage, a repair, or a replacement.

Safe, Ground-Level Inspection

How to Spot Roof Storm Damage From the Ground

After a storm you can learn a lot about your roof without ever leaving the ground. Walk around the house in daylight and look for the signs below. Spotting one doesn’t automatically mean you need a new roof — many storm issues are straightforward repairs — but it does mean a professional should take a closer look.

Please don’t climb onto your roof to check for damage. Wet or storm-damaged shingles are slippery, damaged decking can give way, and downed lines or loose branches can be hard to see. Everything on this list can be spotted from the yard, the sidewalk or a window — and our inspections use a drone, so nobody has to walk a damaged roof to document it.

Shingles & Ridge Caps

  • Missing shingles or bare patches
  • Lifted, displaced or creased shingles
  • Curled or cupped shingle edges
  • Damaged, cracked or missing ridge caps
  • Areas that suddenly look different in color or texture from the shingles around them

Around the Property

  • Pieces of shingle in the yard, driveway or flower beds
  • Roofing debris, nails or granules collecting at downspouts
  • Tree limbs or branches that hit the roof or are resting on it

Flashing, Vents & Pipes

  • Loose, bent or displaced flashing
  • Bent or lifted metal around the chimney
  • Visible damage around roof vents
  • Damage around plumbing pipes and other roof penetrations

Gutters & Metal (Hail Clues)

  • Bent, sagging or detached gutters and downspouts
  • Dents in gutters, downspouts, vents or other metal — a common sign of hail
Tips for a useful look: Check from every side of the house in daylightUse binoculars or your phone’s zoomTake dated photos of anything unusualCheck ceilings and the attic for new stains or dripsNote the storm date — the reports above can help confirm it

After a Storm

A Calm, Step-by-Step Checklist

  1. Stay safe first

Stay off the roof and away from downed power lines and hanging limbs. Wet, damaged roofs are slippery and can be structurally weakened.

  2. Look from the ground

Walk around the house and look for missing or lifted shingles, dented gutters and flashing, branches on the roof and granules collecting at the downspouts. The ground-level guide above lists what to look for.

  3. Check inside

Look at ceilings, the tops of exterior walls and the attic for new stains, drips or damp insulation, especially around chimneys and skylights.

  4. Document everything

Take dated photos and videos of any damage, outside and in. Save the storm date — the reports on this page can help confirm it. Our first 24 hours guide walks through it.

  5. Get a free inspection

We inspect with a drone, document the damage and tell you honestly whether you need a repair, a replacement or nothing at all. If there’s storm damage, we can guide you through the insurance claim.

Shelby Roofing Services has become the go-to for my family. Two of my relatives have used them in the past and had great experiences, and my own experience was just as excellent.

Questions

Storms & Your Roof: Common Questions

Does the Weather & Storm Center update automatically?

Yes. Current conditions, the hourly and 7-day forecast, weather alerts, the radar loop and storm reports all load live from the National Weather Service, NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center and the Iowa Environmental Mesonet. While the page is open it refreshes itself every few minutes, so nobody has to update it by hand.

Can I see the forecast for my town?

Yes. Choose any of the 112 communities we serve across Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, enter your ZIP code, or tap “Use my location.” The forecast, alerts and nearby storm reports switch to that spot, and you can share the link with a neighbor.

How can I tell if my roof has storm damage without climbing on it?

From the ground, look for missing, lifted, creased or curled shingles, damaged ridge caps, shingle pieces or granules in the yard and at the downspouts, bent flashing around the chimney, damage around vents and pipes, dented or detached gutters, and branches on the roof. Binoculars or a phone’s zoom help. If anything looks unusual, request a professional inspection rather than climbing up yourself.

Can heavy rain cause roof leaks?

Heavy or wind-driven rain rarely damages a sound roof on its own, but it’s often when existing weaknesses show up as leaks — worn flashing, cracked pipe boots, clogged valleys or overflowing gutters. New ceiling stains or damp attic insulation after a heavy rain are worth having inspected.

What wind speed can damage a roof?

There isn’t one number for every roof. A properly installed shingle roof is built to handle the gusts we normally see, but gusts in the 45–60 mph range can lift or crease shingles that are aging, loose or poorly sealed, and stronger winds can damage newer roofs too. After a windy storm, look from the ground for missing, lifted or creased shingles and debris on the roof.

What size hail can damage a roof?

Hail around 1 inch (quarter size) and larger is the most likely to bruise asphalt shingles and dent metal flashing, gutters and siding. Smaller hail, even around ¾ inch, can still cause hidden damage on older roofs. Hail damage is often hard to see from the ground, which is why an inspection after a hail report near you is worthwhile.

Does every storm mean I need a new roof?

No. Most storms don’t damage a well-installed, well-maintained roof, and many issues that do occur can be repaired. A free inspection tells you whether there’s damage and, if there is, whether a repair is enough or a replacement makes more sense.

What should I do after a storm?

Stay off the roof and away from downed power lines. Look from the ground for missing shingles, dented gutters or flashing and fallen branches, check ceilings and the attic for leaks, and take dated photos. Then call us for a free inspection — we document any damage and can guide you through an insurance claim.

Do you help with storm damage insurance claims?

Yes. We document storm damage with drone photos, meet with your adjuster, review the scope of loss and submit supplements for items missed in the first assessment. See our storm damage & insurance claims page or our step-by-step claim guide.
